ETG 5-Day Tour Exploring Madrid, Segovia & Salamanca by Train


Another great ETG Tour has been completed. The tour embarked on a five-day journey through Spain's heartland, discovering the rich history, stunning architecture and vibrant culture of Madrid, Segovia, and Salamanca. Traveling by train, our small group enjoyed scenic views and the convenience of quick, comfortable connections between these captivating cities. Here's the itinerary, join us on the next one! 

Day 1: Arriving in Madrid

Morning:

Arrival: Land in Madrid and head to your hotel to check in and freshen up.

Breakfast: Start your day with a traditional Spanish breakfast of churros and chocolate at San Ginés, a historic chocolatería.

Afternoon:

Prado Museum: Spend a few hours exploring this world-renowned museum, home to masterpieces by Velázquez, Goya, and other Spanish artists.

Retiro Park: Enjoy a leisurely walk through this beautiful park, visit the Crystal Palace, and take a boat ride on the lake.

Evening:

Plaza Mayor: Head to this iconic square for dinner at one of the many outdoor cafes. Try some tapas and enjoy the lively atmosphere.

Gran Vía: Stroll down this bustling street, known for its theaters, shops, and vibrant nightlife.

Day 2: Madrid to Segovia

Morning:

Royal Palace: Visit the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family, featuring stunning rooms, halls, and royal collections.

Depart for Segovia: Catch a late morning high-speed AVE train from Madrid Chamartín to Segovia-Guiomar. The journey takes about 30 minutes.

Afternoon:

Roman Aqueduct: Upon arrival, head to Segovia’s most famous landmark. The ancient Roman aqueduct is an impressive feat of engineering and a perfect spot for photos.

Lunch: Enjoy a traditional meal at a local restaurant. Try the famous cochinillo (roast suckling pig).

Evening:

Alcázar of Segovia: Explore this fairy-tale castle, which inspired Disney’s Cinderella Castle. Climb the tower for panoramic views of the city.

Old Town Stroll: Wander through the narrow, cobbled streets of Segovia’s historic center, taking in the charming architecture.

Day 3: Segovia to Salamanca

Morning:

Segovia Cathedral: Start your day with a visit to the “Lady of Cathedrals.” Its Gothic architecture and stunning interior are truly impressive.

Depart for Salamanca: Take a direct Renfe train from Segovia-Guiomar to Salamanca. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Afternoon:

Plaza Mayor: Arrive in Salamanca and head to the Plaza Mayor, one of Spain’s most beautiful squares. Have lunch at one of the cafes and soak in the atmosphere.

University of Salamanca: Visit the historic university, founded in 1218. The intricately carved facade and impressive library are highlights.

Evening:

Tapas Crawl: Explore Salamanca’s vibrant nightlife with a tapas crawl through the old town. Try various local dishes and enjoy the lively student atmosphere.

Day 4: Exploring Salamanca

Morning:

Salamanca Cathedrals: Spend the morning exploring the Old Cathedral (12th century) and the New Cathedral (16th century). The blend of architectural styles is fascinating.

Casa de las Conchas: Visit this famous building adorned with over 300 shells, which now houses a public library.

Afternoon:

Clerecía Church: Climb the towers of this historic church for breathtaking views of Salamanca.

Evening:

Day 5: Return to Madrid

Morning:

Relaxed Breakfast: Have a relaxed breakfast at your hotel or a nearby cafe, savoring your last moments in Salamanca.

Train to Madrid: Board a morning train back to Madrid. The journey takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Afternoon:

El Rastro Market: If it’s a Sunday, visit El Rastro, Madrid’s famous flea market. Browse through antiques, clothes, and unique souvenirs.

Reina Sofía Museum: Explore this contemporary art museum, home to Picasso’s Guernica and works by Dalí and Miró.

Evening:

Farewell Dinner: End your trip with a memorable dinner at a renowned Madrid restaurant. Consider trying a tasting menu that highlights modern Spanish cuisine.

Night Stroll: Take a final evening stroll through Madrid’s illuminated streets, perhaps revisiting your favourite spots or discovering new ones.
